The results from the 2024 Heavy Lift Challenge (HLC) are in!

The Challenge itself was straightforward: using your aircraft – a Horizon Hobby AeroScout S 1.1m – teams assist with local wildfire response efforts by delivering as much water as possible. To accomplish this, teams had to engineer both modifications to the airframe itself as well as a robust payload delivery mechanism. Teams drew on their knowledge of flight fundamentals, meteorology, and aviation safety. These were provided through the AMA’s Ground School training module.

Teams consisted of 2-4 individuals in grades 6-12. These students shared their results through both video and text-based presentations, meaning that this is a competition where EVERY team had a homefield advantage!

Three teams took on the competition this year, which resulted in two teams submitting their final results to the judges.

In first place was team "Lifting Levitation" sponsored by the Indianapolis RC Modelers (AMA club #288) and led by Jeff Thomas. The team delivered 1.62 kg of water. HLC Judges noted this team's thorough report outlining their testing schedule, lessons learned, research performed, and modifications to the AeroScout airframe. This documentation included a great video of the students participating in the competition as well!

The second place team this season was the AeroHAWKS from Hardin Valley Academy, led by Tim Smyrl. This team provided their documentation along with a great video resource outlining their journey and lessons learned.
