AMA Jr Camp V1 - Project 4

AMA Jr. Camp V1 (2020)

Paper Bag Kite Lesson Plan

Objective:

  • To create a decorative paper bag kite using recycled materials.

Materials:

  1. Large brown paper grocery bag (one per child)
  2. Strong string
  3. Scissors
  4. Hole punch
  5. Paper ring reinforcements (or masking tape)
  6. School glue or paste
  7. Paint (tempera, acrylic, etc.)
  8. Crayons, markers, or pencil crayons
  9. Paper streamers or cut crepe paper strips
  10. Found objects (e.g., bits of paper, glitter, buttons)

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the Bag:
    • Punch four holes in the top corners of the paper bag.
    • Reinforce the holes with paper ring reinforcements or tape.
    • Cut two 30-inch lengths of string and tie each end through a hole to create loops.
    • Cut another 30-inch piece of string and loop it through the two loops, tying a knot. This becomes the kite handle.
  2. Decorate the Kite:
    • Let the children decorate the paper bag using paint, markers, or other desired materials.
    • Avoid adding heavy items that could weigh down the kite.
  3. Add Streamers:
    • Glue paper streamers to the bottom of the paper bag as kite tails.
    • Create streamers by cutting crepe paper into strips or using plastic bag strips.
  4. Fly the Kite:
    • Hold the string handle tightly and run to catch the wind.
    • When the bag fills with air, the kite will float and flutter behind you.
    • For higher flight, add a longer handle string.

Safety Tips:

  • Adult supervision is recommended during kite flying.
