Paper Bag Kite Lesson Plan
Objective:
- To create a decorative paper bag kite using recycled materials.
Materials:
- Large brown paper grocery bag (one per child)
- Strong string
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Paper ring reinforcements (or masking tape)
- School glue or paste
- Paint (tempera, acrylic, etc.)
- Crayons, markers, or pencil crayons
- Paper streamers or cut crepe paper strips
- Found objects (e.g., bits of paper, glitter, buttons)
Procedure:
- Prepare the Bag:
- Punch four holes in the top corners of the paper bag.
- Reinforce the holes with paper ring reinforcements or tape.
- Cut two 30-inch lengths of string and tie each end through a hole to create loops.
- Cut another 30-inch piece of string and loop it through the two loops, tying a knot. This becomes the kite handle.
- Decorate the Kite:
- Let the children decorate the paper bag using paint, markers, or other desired materials.
- Avoid adding heavy items that could weigh down the kite.
- Add Streamers:
- Glue paper streamers to the bottom of the paper bag as kite tails.
- Create streamers by cutting crepe paper into strips or using plastic bag strips.
- Fly the Kite:
- Hold the string handle tightly and run to catch the wind.
- When the bag fills with air, the kite will float and flutter behind you.
- For higher flight, add a longer handle string.
Safety Tips:
- Adult supervision is recommended during kite flying.
